Heat or Cold?

Rapid response to injury makes healing that much faster. The benefits of cold and heat when applied to painful areas have been recognized and used for centuries. Yet few people know which of these thermal agents is right in a given circumstance1.

Use of Cold

After an injury, inflammation quickly sets in. This is the acute phase. These signs can persist for seven to ten days. Throughout this phase, applying ice is recommended.

Applying cold:
  • Reduces blood circulation wherever it is applied
  • Reduces cellular activity
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Relieves pain
  • Causes temporary stiffness

Use of Heat

After the acute phase, the body mobilizes to repair damaged tissues. Inflammation disappears. At this time, applying heat is recommended.

Applying heat:
  • Increases cellular activity
  • Increases blood circulation
  • Softens tissues
  • Relieves pain
